The bayan (left hand drum) may be made of iron, aluminium, copper, steel, or clay; yet brass with a nickel or chrome plate is the most common material. Undoubtedly the most striking characteristic of the tabla is the large black spot on each of the playing surfaces. Their function is to create the bell-like timbre that is characteristic of the instrument.

Description of Tabla - A tabla comprises two drums, a bass drum or bayan which is the biggest of the two, played with the left hand, and the treble or dayan, to be placed on the right. The bayan features heavy Copper body whereas the dayan is carved from sturdy wood. Both feature goatskin drumheads and camel leather straps to adjust the pitch. A steel tuning hammer is included while the drums rest upon specially designed pads. This tabla is made with alluring visual harmony enticing percussionists to experience the rhythms of tradition.
